PROJECT The Neons Project
LOCATION Plaine de Plainpalais, Geneva, Switzerland
ORGANISERS Contemporary Art Funds and the City of Geneva
YEAR Since 2007

The centrally located Plaine de Plainpalais is a popular marketplace and public square in Geneva. Its diamond shape points towards the nearby lake waterfront, known for the spectacular reflections the surrounding lights make in the lake’s surface.

The Neons Project, funded by the City of Geneva and various Contemporary Public Art Funds, has commissioned two neon artworks on the rooftops of Plaine de Plainpalais each year for the last three years. Artists are selected from an annual competition, which has extended its bounds each year, and this year is open to international submissions.

While the artworks vary greatly in concept, form and treatment of the medium, each is a site-specific exploration of contemporary issues. They echo the aesthetic of the lakeside’s corporate neon signage in a language of culture and art.
