A new interactive lighting installation will be installed on the bank of Philadelphia’s Schuykill River this week. The installation, called Light Drift, is designed by Höweler+Yoon Architecture and will coincide with the Design Philadelphia festival, which runs until Sunday. Light Drift consists of a grid of 100 wireless transmitter controlled orbs floating on the river’s surface. The field’s pattern changes in response to interactions with landed orbs on the river bank.

The orbs are illuminated by energy-efficient LEDs and molded from PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol), a fully recyclable non-toxic material.
