Renowned Australian artist Fiona Foley and Urban Art Projects (UAP) have collaborated to develop a significant landscape marker for the Mackay Bluewater Trail. At a special launch event at UAP’s premises on 20 August, invited guests joined the artist and UAP staff to  witness the inaugural testing of the artwork’s internal lighting system.

The 9.5m high weathered steel sculpture is illuminated from within by two rings of solar powered blue LEDs. Echoing the stars of the night sky under which the artwork will be placed, pinpricks of light stream through holes in the upper pod.

The Mangrove Pod is one of 6 artworks that UAP has produced with Fiona Foley for the Bluewater Trail development. Visitors enjoyed viewing samples of these and other sculptures in progress in the UAP workshop.
