Motoi Yamamoto’s latest exhibition was held in a large brick tunnel in France’s Fondation Espace Ecureuil. The artwork is titled Labyrinth, and is part of a series that has been presented across the globe since May 2001. Yamamoto creates each installation by sprinkling salt onto the floor through a fine-nozzled plastic oil bottle. He begins at the back and works his way to the front to avoid standing on his creation.
In Japan, salt is a symbol of purification and mourning. Yamamoto first began sketching with salt in honour of his sister, who died of brain cancer. His endless intertwined patterns create a sense of reverence and eternity.
